Great Buy August 6, 2010 Speedykid08 This a great hard drive. It makes vary little noise, only when you are writhing files to it. Transfers are vary fast, I transfered 20GB about 10 min. I work on both mac and pc so I formatted the hard drive to work with my mac then I download a software that can read mac hard drives on to my pc. Every thing works great and I would highly recommend this to anyone.
Does the Job June 25, 2010 Aldo Miro (United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This eGo 1 TB desktop drive would have gotten a 5 star rating from me except for the fact that the first drive I received from Amazon didn't work. I followed Iomega's instructions and it seemed to start up properly, however, my iMac wouldn't recognize the drive. Called Iomega tech support who took me through a battery of tests and restarts, including connecting to one of my Windows PC's to see if it would mount there so we could "kill the partition" but that didn't work either (-tech guy said it was probably a defective internal connector or something), so I was given a choice of returning it through Amazon for another new unit or doing an advance RMA replacement directly through Iomega, which is what I did since it seemed quicker. Got the replacement eGo in a few days, went through the simple setup process to connect to my iMac and set it up for full auto backups with Time Machine, and it's been working like a charm ever since. I have other Iomega external drives for backups on several PC's here at home and they're all reliable and efficient. This one sits neatly and unobtrusively and relatively quietly on its little sled-like support stand behind my 27" iMac screen plugged into one of its 2.0 USB ports and, as an added plus (if you care a whit about style), when viewed from the side-rear, its cool black & silver case and pilot light match the new iMac color and design perfectly.
Just the right one for plentiful storing! June 18, 2010 D. Mccauley (COLLEYVILLE, TX, US) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The external hard drives are commonly used either for storage or back up purposes and thatz of the reasons I bought the Iomega eGo 1 TB external hard drive for my desktop. It is a simple plug and play device with the USB interface. Downloadable Iomega Protectionsuite is indeed appreciable. The file copying speed is ok with me but I still prefer the eSATA connection. The instructions to reformat the drive for Mac computers were very helpful. I reformatted a drive to suit my Mac and I succeeded in the first try.
The boot time is just a few seconds. The movie and audio playback is really great and no stuttering whatsoever. The power switch is a good addition too. These are the basic things one would look for in a good HD. This is just the right one, of a HD, if you don't mind the absence of eSATA interface.
Does a great job April 29, 2010 Mrs. Night Owl 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
Doing this review was a little difficult because the basic functionality of most external hard drives is the same, which is storing and backing up data from one or multiple computers. External hard drives have become a commodity, so you need to think about what makes this drive different and what factors make an external hard drive better or worse. The answer will typically depend on these factors:
1) how much data do you need to store on the external drive?
2) how often and in what quantities do you add or remove data?
3) do you need to access the data over a home or work network or will you connect the external hard drive to your home or laptop computer?
I own three external hard drives. Two are USB (including this model) and one is eSATA. If you are frequently transferring large quantities of data then you should buy an eSATA external hard drive because the data transfer speed is at least 5x faster than USB. For example, I can copy/paste 40,000 photos and 2,000 MP3s at a blistering rate with eSATA. I can still perform the same procedure with USB but it will take longer. If you are not in a big rush, then don't bother with eSATA... the USB will work fine.
PROS
- very easy to use
- quiet
- small
CONS
- none noted
COMPARING (to other related devices)
- Not as fast as eSATA, but this point is irrelevant if you don't need to have the faster transfer speeds.
- Not a NAS (Network Attached Storage) which simply means an external hard drive with expanded functionality. This feature is really cool if you want to
dump all of your media (songs, pictures) and hook the external hard drive up to a wireless router. NAS allows for file sharing and storage over a network.
Bottom line: this hard drive does a terrific job for what it is designed to do: storage and backup.
NOTE: an eSATA hard drive requires an eSATA connection on your computer. I had to buy an eSATA card for my home computer ($20 at local electronics store) so I could use my eSATA drive.
Excellent external drive April 15, 2010 D. A. Dodd (Huntsville, AL United States) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
Unlike many external hard drives, this one has a feature that is a must -- an on/off power switch. Other externals I've tried, while reliable are a pain if you don't want them running all the time. Since they are generally used as backup drives, they wouldn't need to run all the time. Therefore you'd have to unplug the hard drive, either from the wall or on the back of the drive, which could be inconvenient if your workspace has limited room.
This one is also the quietest drives I've also used. Others would make clicking noises as data was being copied (not the click of death that signals a hard drive failure), but all noises with this one are very subtle.
Out of the box, the drive seems reliable, but that's something I won't know for sure until several months down the road. However, like with all external hard drives, don't store your data on them and have them as the only source as they can fail suddenly. Always backup to CD/DVD/BluRay media as a primary and this as a secondary, if it's being used as a backup drive only.
