5 out of 5 stars First ext b/u purchased   September 5, 2010
Idaho Walker (Idaho)
I had never purchased a back up before and relied on previous reviews to help me make the purchase. I read several positives about the WD ELements 1TB and the price was good. It was very easy to hook up and I have to assume it's doing it's job as the light comes on and blinks! So far so good. Am happy with the decision.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent External Hard Drive   September 4, 2010

I purchased this a little more then 3 months ago. I have been very pleased with it. It is smaller than I expected, and it makes no noise. It is difficult to tell that it is even on. It also has never gotten warm; it is always cool to the touch. It's speed and performance is as expected.

There are no lights on the front of the drive. There is one LED on the back. For me, that is perfect, I don't need any extra lights. However, if you were wanting to see a status light, it might be a problem. If the light is not an issue for you, than this is a great product!

Awesome product, comes as advertised; no complaint what so ever for the moment... But, i do appreciate the speedy delivery and how well kept the product came in the packaging... Would highly recommend to other in need of a versatile and economical external hard drive with this much space for storage...

The Western Digital 1TB external hard drive is the no-frills, hassle-free external hard drive techies dream about. It has no fancy metal casing that's just going to add dollars to the price. Instead, what Western Digital offers is a minimalist, reliable device. The hard drive doesn't have any annoying pre-installed backup software that can't be turned off or uninstalled. Instead the plug-and-play ease allows you to start backing up your content in seconds after taking it out of the box.

The hard drive itself is solid. It lies down on its back rather than standing up which makes it less likely of accidentally tipping it over. It's not that big and even though it's advertised as a desktop hard drive I've taken it with me in my backpack without taking too much room. Rather pay less for this than pay more for a so-called portable hard drive with half its space capacity. The casing is black matted except for its sides which are glossy. I wish Western Digital had gone with either/or but the differentiation isn't that noticeable. It has a nice weight without being heavy and its size has the feel of nice compact book.

Besides the hard drive, it comes with an adapter and a mini USB cable. The mini USB cable can be used on other devices as well. The mini USB cable I used for my PlayStation Portable broke so I used my hard drive's cable and it worked. I've also used it on my digital camera so its use is versatile.

This is my second external hard drive I've ever gotten. The first one (made by HP) was expensive ($120) and annoying to use. I exchanged that and took a chance with Western Digital and I'm glad I did. I've now had this hard drive for 6 months and it has worked flawlessly. It doesn't get hot and or make any noise. Some reviewers complain of the white light on the back of the hard drive being its only indicator of when a file is being transferred, but most of the time I rely on the status bar on my PC to see when a file is completely transferred over so I don't see it as a problem.
